I began the study of yoga at age 14 after finding Swami Satchidananda’s book, Integral Yoga Hatha.
From this auspicious beginning I soon found B.K.S. Iyengar’s book, Light on Hatha Yoga. I was soon saved from harmful practices by the compassion of the Himalayan Yoga Tradition in the form of a close initiate of Swami Rama of the Himalaya’s. Soon after I was introduced to my teacher, Dr. Usharbudh Arya (soon to become known as Swami Veda Bharati).
I became initiated by Swami Veda Bharati in the Himalayan Yoga Tradition at the age of 23.
I have also become initiated in the Karakudi tradition of Karnatik Music by my South Indian classical music guru, Shree Vidya Chandramauli since 2007.
I began teaching at age 12 and my youngest student was 1 ½ years old, while my oldest student was 103 years old. Since 2012 I have taught all levels of yoga, and taught in many different circumstances from conventional yoga studios to special needs environments, correctional facilities, assisted living facilities, and as part of a special YES program in Kurdistan and Lebanon.
I have also studied with Anusara tradition teachers and have come to feel that the alignment principles of Anusara Yoga are intelligent and worth learning.
The Himalayan Yoga Tradition is a meditative tradition and of all the traditions I have come to know, the most viable in terms of honesty and allegiance to the concept of yoga as samadhi.
The Himalayan Yoga Tradition supports the sisterhood of yoga and Ayurveda and as such, is the quintessential definition of holistic health, holistic living and sustainability for the individual, the individual within community and the community in relation to the global environment.
The Himalayan Yoga Tradition by far, offers the most comprehensive experience of yoga science and philosophy.
As both a yogi and a musician, I seek to practice and to share the practice of yoga, as my teachers have done before me.
Most of my teaching is done as service (i.e. I am not paid for the majority of classes I teach). The question as to whether this service is for those I serve or for myself, is an ongoing question!
