About Svastha Yoga Aotearoa

Barbara Coley

Yoga has been an integral part of my life since 1992, shaping the way I move, think, and teach. I became a certified yoga teacher in 2006 and have been sharing this practice since 2007. My journey led me to study yoga therapy in 2010, deepening my understanding of how yoga practices can be used to enhance wellbeing. After 6 years of training and practicum, I received yoga therapist certification in 2016.

I am passionate about making yoga inclusive, accessible, and relevant to everyday life. My teaching focuses on fostering mind-body integration, supporting the nervous system, and promoting overall wellness. I believe yoga should be adaptable to each individual rather than confined to rigid rules or traditions. My approach encourages students to explore movement with awareness, helping them build strength, mobility, and ease, both on and off the mat.

I present a 200 hour yoga teacher training (RYT 200), 85 hour prenatal training (RPYT), and various continuing education programs (YACEP). As an educator, my aim is to move beyond dogmatic teaching methods and outdated alignment cues, instead offering a functional and mindful approach to practice. I encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and adaptability in teaching, empowering trainees to work with diverse communities in a way that is compassionate, effective, and sustainable.

I have been very fortunate to be a  student of A. G. Mohan and Indra Mohan of Svastha Yoga Ayurveda. These exceptional teachers, who have a direct link to the ‘father of modern yoga,’ Sri T. Krishnamacharya, are among the most knowledgeable in the field today. I continue to study with them and their son, Dr. Ganesh Mohan.
