Duncan is a highly experienced and dedicated yoga practitioner and teacher based in Durban, South Africa. With advanced qualifications from the International Yoga Alliance Certification and extensive training in traditional Hatha yoga institutions in India, Duncan brings the ancient Indian philosophy of yoga to the local community through his yoga school, Yogam Yoga.
Inspired by his father, who studied yoga in Kolkata, India, in the 1940s, Duncan witnessed first-hand from an early age the transformative benefits of Hatha yoga in maintaining physical and mental well-being, particularly for older individuals. Drawing on his deep understanding of yoga philosophy and teachings, Duncan's classes are rooted in ancient traditions passed down through generations of teachers. He incorporates the principles of Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga, Ayurveda, and Hatha Yoga, focusing on creating balance and harmony in the body, calming the mind, and helping individuals connect with their true selves.
Duncan's extensive training includes certifications from renowned institutions such as the Aananda Yoga India Shala, Parmth Niketan Ashram, Kaivalyadhama Gurukul, and Shivananda Yoga Ashram and Hospital. He has also studied the teachings of the Bihar School of Yoga and has a deep commitment to Seva (Service), having also studied prison yoga through Seva Unite. Duncan's approach to yoga is rooted in the principles of Ahimsa (Non-Violence), and he follows a vegan lifestyle.
Duncan's classes cater to individuals of all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners, and from young to old. He particularly enjoys teaching pranayama (breath control) and believes that it is never too late to start practising yoga.
In addition to his regular classes, Duncan runs 200-hour traditional Hatha Yoga teaching courses in Durban over a year. These courses draw on the expertise of Swamis and doctors to provide comprehensive training for aspiring teachers who wish to make yoga their Seva (selfless service) and share its benefits with others. Duncan is also actively involved in community work, teaching yoga to children in schools, running yoga outreach programmes for disadvantaged people, leading retreats at the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo, and teaching at the many yoga and wellness festivals in South Africa. He is also a regular teacher on the SABC TV station's Sadhana programme.
Duncan Rice's passion for yoga, extensive training, and commitment to sharing the transformative power of this ancient practice make his donation-based school, Yogam Yoga, a highly respected and sought-after institution in Durban. Whether teaching individuals or groups, Duncan's teachings have had a profound impact on the lives of many, and he continues to inspire and guide others on their yoga journey.
