About Lisa Jang, E-RYT® 500, YACEP, Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy Certified (The Embody Lab), Yoga Medicine©Teacher, RMM©️ Tune Up Fitness Certified, AFAA Primary Group Fitness
Growing up in the lush, rainy beauty of British Columbia, I found peace in nature—whether it was riding my bike through the woods or basking in the sun at John Hendry Park (Trout Lake). My childhood summers were filled with adventure and connection, especially when I volunteered at the summer day camp there, witnessing the excitement of the kids on field trips and adventures. Those carefree summer days sparked my love for connection, exploration, and the joy of discovery.
In 2001, I moved to California, seeking the endless sunshine, but also facing the challenge of missing my family and friends back in Vancouver. It was during this time of transition that I found yoga. My first class, taken after a kickboxing session, provided me with an unexpected sense of peace. It was in that moment that yoga became an essential, grounding practice in my life—one that helped me navigate homesickness and personal challenges with grace and presence.
My journey took a pivotal turn when I faced profound loss. My mother suffered a stroke, and though I was living far from home, I was unable to be there for her in her final days. This loss, compounded by the death of my father when I was a teenager, led me into deep grief. Yoga became my refuge during this challenging time, providing solace and helping me heal emotionally, mentally, and physically. It was through yoga that I began to reconnect with myself and find peace amidst the storm.
Commitment to Learning from the Best & Living Authentically:
Throughout my career, I have been unwavering in my commitment to learning from the very best in the field of yoga and wellness. I believe that in order to offer the highest quality of guidance to my students, I must continually seek out the most knowledgeable and skilled teachers in the world. But my learning is not just about accumulating knowledge—it’s about embodying what I learn and living authentically.
I have had the honor of studying directly with some of the most renowned and respected figures in the yoga community. My Yin Yoga journey began with the pioneers of the practice, including Bernie Clark, Paul and Suzee Grilley—each of whom shaped my understanding of the subtleties of this deeply yin style. My Lila Style Vinyasa training has been shaped by the expertise of Noell Clark, Angie Poon, Clara Roberts-Oss, Kathryn Budig, and Tiffany Cruikshank, each of whom has deepened my understanding of both the physical and philosophical aspects of yoga.
My pursuit of knowledge has also led me to study with Jill Miller in the Roll Model Method (RMM) through Tune Up Fitness, a modality that enhances my approach to bodywork and myofascial release. I continue to expand my practice through Integrative Somatic Therapy with The Embody Lab, learning from experts like Dr. Scott Lyons, Deb Dana, Dr. Arielle Swartz, and Dr. Peter Levine. Their teachings, along with my acupressure studies at McKinnon School, have helped me deepen my understanding of how the body holds and processes emotional trauma.
I have also sought wisdom from Jo Phee, creator of Myo-Yin Yoga, and continue to explore the science of sound healing through my training with Ali in Chiang Mai. Each of these incredible teachers has not only expanded my knowledge but has also enriched my personal and professional life, and I am forever grateful for their guidance. The lessons I have learned from these world-class instructors have shaped my practice and my teaching, and I remain committed to lifelong learning.
One of the most transformative experiences in my life came when I sat in ceremony with the Yawanawa and Huni Kuin tribes. This profound experience of connection and spiritual awakening gave me life and light in ways I never anticipated. The deep wisdom and practices of these indigenous peoples infused my journey with a sense of interconnectedness and reverence for the natural world. This experience has had a lasting impact on both my personal growth and the way I approach my teaching, as I strive to live and teach with greater authenticity, grounded in the sacredness of all life.
Teaching Philosophy:
With almost two decades of experience in yoga and group fitness, my teaching is an embodiment of this continuous dedication to growth and learning. I co-facilitate the 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training and lead the Yin Yoga Teacher Training Program at Joya Yoga, passing on the knowledge and wisdom I’ve gathered. I also offer an Online Yin Yoga Teacher Training at JoyaSoul TV, creating a space for students worldwide to explore the depths of this restorative practice.
My classes are a blend of inquiry, exploration, and empowerment. I believe that there is no single “right way” to practice yoga; instead, I guide students to listen to their bodies, trust their intuition, and make choices that serve them in the present moment. Each practice is an invitation to explore and discover the self, to ask questions, and to deepen the connection with one’s own body and spirit.
Education is at the heart of what I do. I provide students with the knowledge to shift perspectives, empowering them to live more mindfully and in alignment with their own unique body and experience. I encourage them to see the world through a lens of curiosity and self-awareness, knowing that true growth happens when we allow ourselves to continuously learn and evolve.
When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me immersed in nature, reading, and exploring spiritual teachings through podcasts, seeking deeper connections with the source and the greater universe. My commitment to learning from the best, living authentically, and evolving on my path continues to guide me, and I am honored to share this journey with my students.
