Excerpt from Orlando Voyager Magazine

Hi Maureen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I remember my first yoga class that I took at a gym with my friend. It was after that first class that I knew I wanted to become a yoga instructor. The breath, the poses, the message, I wanted to know all about that. So after taking yoga classes all over Orlando for about 5 years, I finally embarked upon my first yoga teacher training in 2004. Three years later, I made my way to Mysore, India to study Ashtanga Yoga from the well known K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. It was then and there that I decided that yoga would be my path, not just a career, or an exercise, it was in India that I learned that Yoga is a Life Path. Yoga is built of many spiritual and holistic practices, that one does not need anything more to maintain utmost health mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. For the past 25 years, yoga has been there for me, and it has given me so much.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, as it can be sometimes difficult to make a living as a yoga teacher. First of all, yoga education is pricey. A thorough yoga teacher training can cost a few thousand dollars, and that’s just the beginning. Additional trainings, workshops, and devotional trips to India cost thousands more. Because of this, many yoga teachers run all over town, from studio, to fitness center, to gym teaching classes all day long just trying to make ends meet. This was me in the beginning too, but it became exhausting, so I went back to teaching high school and made teaching yoga my side hustle. On the bright side, I was able to continue my studies in yoga, continuing my education and in the U.S. and India over the next several years. Not many yoga teachers go on to advanced yoga teacher trainings because of the cost and because it’s not required in order to teach. Lucky for me, I had a career that afforded me the time and the income to pursue these additional trainings.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Clarity Global Yoga is an online platform for yoga students. As the owner and lead trainer, I personally guide you through each course. We meet weekly via video chat, and if you live in the Central Florida are, you can come and meet with me and your classmates for some hands on training once per month. Some of the courses we offer are our 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training for those who want to take their first or beginner YTT; next we have the 300 Hour YTT for yoga teachers who want to teach advanced yoga and become more knowledgeable in history, philosophy, and yoga science. We also have an eight week Ashtanga Yoga Intensive for those who want to challenge themselves physically and spiritually, good for any levels.
In addition to these long form courses, we have online yoga classes, YouTube, live Instagram Classes, and resources for yoga teachers. What sets us apart is that the way I teach is to the individual, making sure the knowledge is being passed properly from teacher to student. Our online courses are not do it yourself, we hold you hand the whole way through to completion. As a former school teacher, our lessons can be adapted to all learning abilities and different learners, and we also offer our trainings in Spanish as well as for ESOL students.

What are your plans for the future?
In the next few years I hope that the Clarity Global Yoga community grows. As more and more students move through our programs, classes, and trainings, I am excited by the collaborative efforts to plan and create experiences for the Orlando community. Our graduates help each other out by sharing information about available jobs, and events. The Clarity Global Community is so uplifting, and to see that expand is my plan for the future.
